What SEPA Instant means for your cash flow

Money that lands in seconds, any hour of any day, changes more than convenience. It changes how a business plans, pays and trusts. Here is what to expect.

Instant euro payment flows

For most of banking's history, a payment was a promise with a delay attached. You pressed send, and somewhere a clearing window had to open before the money moved. SEPA Instant removes that delay. A euro payment now settles in seconds, not the next business day, not after the cut-off, but in the time it takes to read this sentence. It works at three in the morning on a bank holiday as well as it does at midday on a Tuesday.

That sounds like a small upgrade. In practice it reshapes the rhythm of how a business handles money.

What SEPA Instant is

SEPA Instant is the real-time version of the standard Single Euro Payments Area transfer. Same reach across the SEPA area, same euro currency, same familiar IBAN, settled the moment you send it rather than within one business day. It runs 24/7/365. There are no clearing windows to wait for and no weekend pause. Payments go through on Saturdays, on Sundays and on public holidays as they do on a working weekday.

The contrast with standard SEPA is the whole point:

What it changes for cash flow

When money moves in seconds rather than days, the float you used to plan around disappears. You no longer need to send a Thursday payment to be sure it clears before the weekend, or hold a buffer to cover the gap between sending and settling. The cash on your screen is the cash you have, in real time.

That precision lets you hold funds for longer and move them at the moment they are needed. A supplier deadline at 6pm on a Sunday is no longer a problem to manage on Monday. You pay it. Treasury stops being an exercise in predicting clearing times and becomes a matter of choosing when, not whether, the money will land.

What it changes for payroll

Payroll is where the delay used to bite hardest. Run it a day late and people wait; run it early to be safe and you lose use of the cash sooner than you needed to. With SEPA Instant you run payroll on the day itself, even if that day falls on a weekend or a public holiday, and watch it arrive in your team's accounts within seconds. No more awkward conversations about a payment that is "in the system" but not yet visible. Paid means paid, at once.

What it changes for supplier trust

Instant settlement carries a reputational benefit that is easy to overlook. When a supplier sees your payment land before they have put the phone down, you become the customer who pays on the spot. That reliability earns goodwill, smoother terms and a place at the front of the queue. Late or uncertain payment, by contrast, is one of the fastest ways to strain a working relationship. Instant settlement removes the ambiguity. The proof is in their account, not in a promise.

What it changes for treasury

For anyone managing liquidity across several accounts or entities, round-the-clock settlement is a structural shift. Cash can be swept, topped up or rebalanced at any hour, not just inside banking hours, so idle balances work harder and shortfalls can be covered the instant they appear. Forecasting tightens because there is no longer a multi-day tail of "sent but not settled" payments distorting the picture. You see your true position continuously, and you act on it continuously.

How Settled supports it

Every Settled account comes with dedicated EU IBANs and SEPA Instant built in, so real-time euro payments are the default rather than an upgrade you have to ask for. Sending and receiving over SEPA costs 0.1% (minimum €2), and internal Settled-to-Settled transfers are free and instant. You hold euros alongside 12+ other currencies in one account, convert only when you choose to, at transparent FX from 1%, or 0.75% on Premium, and send the moment a payment is due, at any hour of any day.

As a financial institution authorised and regulated by the MFSA under the Financial Institutions Act and passported across the EU/EEA, Settled puts real-time euro settlement behind a single, clear account. Plans start at €50 a month for Basic, €75 for Plus and €150 for Premium.

The short version

SEPA Instant turns the payment from a promise into a fact. Money settles in seconds, every day of the year, weekends and holidays included, and that turns cash flow, payroll, supplier relationships and treasury from things you schedule around into things you do. The delay is gone. What is left is the money, where and when you need it.
